Text by Haylie Do you have a dream? I do. It sure is fun to have a dream. Well Mrs. Melissa (our special visitor from Friday), has a dream and she is working hard to make sure that her dream comes true, but her dream requires lots of things in order for it to come true. Melissa started out in Spain where she was teaching at an international school, and is riding her bike all the way to America, (Oregon to be exact). Mrs. Melissa plans on going through 4 continents (20 countries) in order to make her dream come true. If you were riding your bike around the world, what would you bring with you? Melissa had to solve that problem too. Whatever she brought was going to be put on the bike, making the bike heavier. What was brought isn’t much. Melissa carries lots of water, a little extra food, money she has saved up, a camera, a laptop, and a few pairs of clothes. Those are just the basics. To learn even more about Melissa and her long way home as she calls it go to www.theloongwayhome.com and get a better idea of her journey ahead of her. Descriptive paragraph by Elise Down the rocky street and into the golden gate you will find a path leading to a pond.
The green trees dance with their partners gracefully. You get blinded by the light coming from the white, dazzling daises as they glisten in the sun light. The sun splashes into the pond with utter beauty. The sweet air dry’s your mouth and the pine trees fill your mouth with brown, sweet cinnamon. The birds fly as gently as white, silver swans. Within minutes you fall deeply in love with the little, shiny, yellow ducklings rapidly swimming by. Rainbow clouds float over your head. During your visit it seems like an eternity. For as long as I remember the colorful park stays as stunning as ever. This is my favorite place to be. Descriptive story by Eugenio That day, underwater was the day. The day when the lord of the ocean couldn’t find food, when food was simply just not passing in front of the great white shark. He had been wandering around for hours, starved, and when the shark was about to give up, a vast, grayish fish swam quickly in front of him in camouflage, hoping to confuse the shark. But the great white could not be fooled, and after that the chase began.
Throughout the pursuit, caves and other obstacles blocked the great white, but the fish, who was not as big as the predator, could pass through them in a blink of an eye. Surrounding the shark was long, murky seaweed, and by the seaweed was the crafty, little fish. Deeper into the sea there was a dark, but visible cave, that just stood there, marking its spot, like a guard dog guarding its owner’s house. The hunger inside the shark now struck like a hammer in the stomach. The shark now knew that if he didn’t catch the fish soon, he would die painfully. It was during the end of the chase, when the small fish encountered some litter from the disgraceful humans. He knew it was crazy, but it was his last hope, so he hid behind it. When the shark came around, the garbage too, was trembling, for the predator had spotted them. When the shark reached for it, there was the small fish, right there, visible, but the shark was paralyzed, for he realized the fish had escaped, and he had eaten the litter. The fish now illuminated in the faraway sea, and the shark, not being able to breathe, sank deeper into the ocean. 100 Word Challenge by Emil Gray, dark, sparkling... all different adjectives describing one thing. Rain. As I leap against the funny looking lake as a frog jumping for a fly, I see a tortoise on land walking slowly. I wave to it as if it can understand, as if we have something in common. As I travel through the air my imagination becomes thoughts different things pop into my head. As raindrops fall from a cloud gray as pavement, the last orange leave falls from the ancient tree. I come closer to the water. Four… three… two… one… my last sight is blue…
100 Word Challenge by Nidhi In animal land Mr. Tortoise went shopping. He went to buy a juicy orange for his sick, tired and hopeless wife. As he walked down the steep pavement, he saw a fruit shop. He bought two oranges. One for him and his wife. While walking Mr. Bear was so careless that the dashed in to Mr. Tortoise His oranges fell and rolled away. Mr. Bear waved instead of saying sorry. He didn't even bother to help. Mr. Rabbit hopped along. He was a funny rabbit. Even when Mr. Tortoise begged for help Mr. Rabbit poked his nose and hopped away. Will Mr. Tortoise ever get his oranges?
100 Word Challenge by Eugenio This all began when Jonathan went to the circus. Jonathan never did anything fun, so his parents decided to bring him. There, he started loving the funny clown. He thought the clown was hilarious so when he escaped he went after him. During the chase, the clown lost one of his orange slippers, so Jonathan snatched it up for him. When the clown realized he had a fan, he stumbled on the pavement. Jonathan waved at him, and he waved back. They became friends and the clown even showed him the pet tortoise. After that, they lived happily ever after!!!
100 Word Challenge by Nina Once there was a girl named Isabella and she went to a market to buy an orange so she can eat it for her dinner when she gets hungry. Then when she got out of the store she went and walked n the sidewalk and she met a turtle. It waved to the girl and the girl waved back the turtle did it in a really funny way. They were talking the whole time till they came to the house, and the things that they were talking about were really interesting. Then they went back to their house and said that they will see each other the next day…
100 Word Challenge by Haylie Evan B. Shoewalker, (yes his last name is Shoewalker), was walking down the long, waved, pavement in a neighborhood where scientists lived. Across the street a funny looking sign taped on to a cardboard box caught his eye. After looking both ways, Evan crossed the street when no cars were coming. He found the sign read,
FREE PET TORTOISE LIKES TO EAT LETTUCE, GRAPES, AND APPLES TAKE IT AT YOUR OWN PERSONAL RISK Interested greatly, Evan peeked inside the cardboard box to find an orange turtle with blue eyes. Then, POOF! Evan was gone. Why? The tortoise ate him. Text by Haylie and Eugenio On April 6, 1992 war between Serbia and Bosnia broke out. The war ended on December 14, 1995. During the 3 years of war, mines were placed by Bosnian soldiers in about 13,000 locations to help protect Sarajevo (the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.)After the war ended it was demanded for the army to reveal all minefield locations, but they didn’t reveal all of them for some reason. The way we know this is because mines are still being found to this day, 20 years later. Mines are bombs that can be placed underground, on top of trees, or even surface laid. They were used in the Bosnian War to protect Sarajevo and to ambush their enemies. Mines are usually green to help camouflage in the grass or in the ground. To this day, adults and even kids play or step on active mines. Most mines have tripwires, some jump into the air, some can be buried, and some can also have metal legs to stand on. Mines have tripwire that is almost impossible to see. If you trip on a tripwire the mine will go off immediately. Places where children are safe from mines are places that have been cleared out from mines or never had any mines. Places like your house, school, library, a park, etc. You may find mines in destroyed or abandoned buildings, fields outside of the city, and forests. If you ever see a red sign with skull and crossbones on it, it means there is a mine near you so does not go past. You may also see yellow tape around an area, so do not go inside because there is probably a mine. If you see a mine, you should get out of the area and report it to your parents immediately. Hopefully they will call the police, so they can secure the area. If you see a wire or a green container, it might be packaging for mines so flee the area and call the police! Remember, not all minefields are marked, so always be careful where you go and step. If you are going on a picnic or other activity that might be near a minefield, there are lots of important ways to stay safe.
There are is one type of bomb that you can still find these days anywhere, which makes them more dangerous than mines. They are called UXOs and they can even be in your own basement. Some people keep UXOs without knowing what they are, and other people keep them to protect themselves in case war brakes out again (which is most likely not going to happen anytime soon). Nevertheless, if you see an object that you think might look like a bomb, stay away, do not touch, and call the police. Now you know how it’s like for people in Bosnia that live near mines. |
