For the past two years, our school, QSI International School of Sarajevo, has been involved with Roots and Shoots which helps young people to improve the environment and help people in need around the world. Not only Roots and Shoots help Sarajevo, they help at least one hundred twenty countries in the world. With over three thousand projects, over one million hours were devoted to the community; more than four million people help. Founded by Jane Goodall, a chimpanzee researcher, Roots and Shoots helps the world. Way at the beginning of the year in early September QSI Sarajevo Roots & Shoots hosted a fall clean-up. Over 100 people volunteered to help out. When every participant was given a big trash bag and plastic gloves they were all set to pick up some garbage. Volunteers cleaned up near the school area and down the road. Most of the upper-schoolers went down to downtown Sarajevo to pick up trash by the train station. After the event you could really see an improvement in the environment, barely a single piece of trash to be seen! In October QSI Sarajevo Roots & Shoots held a pajama drive which was a HUGE hit because if you donated you got to wear your pajamas and bring in a stuffed animal to school. The things you could donate included brand new undergarments, socks, and of course pajamas! 120 pajamas were donated as well as 38 pairs of socks, 18 undershirts and 46 pairs of underwear. That adds up to 222 donations! I think that most of the smaller students enjoyed donating because of wearing their pajamas. But anyway it helped a lot because we donated the things to a children’s hospital. Winter was a cold month here in Sarajevo. Some Bosnians didn’t have the proper winter clothing. Roots and Shoots wanted to help out, so they decided to donate winter clothing to Pimentino Srce Vogosca. In total, QSI Sarajevo donated a total of sixty-nine pairs of socks, forty-six pairs of underwear, eighteen undershirts, six scarves, twenty pairs of gloves, twenty-nine hats, forty-two pairs of boots, fifty-nine jackets, sixty-five pairs of pants, and one hundred forty-six shirts. Roots and Shoots QSI Sarajevo did it for the needy people without winter clothing. Food is something that we need on a daily basis. But some people do not have the money to buy food for their families. This is why Roots and shoots in Sarajevo was donating food to poor families in Sarajevo. With about 40% of people in Sarajevo who do not have jobs, they cannot get money to buy basic necessities like food. (The unemployment rate is 43% but the 3% works on the gray economy). But the school raised 611 kilograms of food. That 611 KG was sent to 50 Families in Sarajevo who do not have jobs. The Valentines party was for the poor kids who come from a sad and poor background. But all of the kids got to have fun in the school and have fun! There are hundreds of thousands of stray dogs in Bosnia. And most of the dogs have to hunt for food. They go around town in packs of 3 to 10. The Av- Mao Rescue shelter is trying to find homes for these dogs. So Roots and Shoots are helping the shelter by the whole school donating Dog food. It is still going on, but it will end at the end of the month. After the Upcoming Easter Break there’s going to be a school supply drive. The things that can be donated will be brand new pencils, pens, notebooks, erasers, etc. The only things that can be used are pencil cases and backpacks but even those have to be gently used. Not much is known about it yet because, well, it didn’t happen yet. But the students in Roots & Shoots are sure it’s going to be a success! Ever heard of pollution? That’s when human beings litter. A lot of people litter in Bosnia. Therefore, Roots and Shoots QSI International School of Sarajevo is going to do a spring clean-up in order for Bosnia’s environment to grow healthier and not be polluted from trash. Whoever joins the spring clean-up will receive a barbeque lunch. Last year we had over one hundred people volunteer. We are hoping to make it grow even bigger this time. You will be picking up trash and eating some good Barbeque!
